About this Item
Stacpoole, H. de Vere. The Island of Lost Women. New York: Sears Publishing Company, Inc., [1930]. First U.S. edition. Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v-vi 7-286 [287] [288: blank]. Original yellow cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black, fore-edge untrimmed, bottom edge rough trimmed. A fine copy in fair pictorial dust jacket with dusty spine panel, creases to front and a few negligible chips. #1531. $75. Published in England the same year by Hutchinson as The Chank Shell: A Tropical Romance of Love and Treasure. An excellent tale of adventure, crime, romance and fantasy set in the South Seas, a favorite locale for Stacpoole, who spent time there as a young doctor aboard a ship. Weird atmosphere hovers over the story from start to finish (aided by such fantastic touches as secret poisons, crystal gazing and a far-reaching criminal conspiracy of Chinese merchants). At its core is a serious and prolonged meditation on the theme of fate and luck: the good kind (which emanates from a charm, the chank shell of the British title), and the bad kind (commonly understood as a curse, which emanates from a hidden treasure).
