About this Item
Small 8vo. [4], 3-108, [2] pp. Bound in maroon cloth with lettering and horizontal rules in gold on the front board and the spine, light brown topstain. Frontispiece portrait of Bergson with tissue guard. Lacks the dust jacket. First translated into English by Sydney Littman. Gunter 36. This essay was originally published in French in 1903 and it marked the beginning of Bergson's rise to fame and his influence on both philosophy and literature. William James was one of those influenced by this essay and he became a supporter and admirer of Bergson. The essay was later included in Bergson's final collection La Pensée et le mouvant [The Creative Mind] and is one of the cornerstone works in Bergson's philosophy. Bergson won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1927 "in recognition of his rich and vitalizing ideas and the brilliant skill with which they have been presented." A beautiful copy of an uncommon book.
