Sinclair, May. The Intercessor and Other Stories. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1932. First U.S. edition. (Presumably printed from the plates of the UK edition, since the page counts are identical.) Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7 [8-10] 11-222 [223-224: blank]. Original violet cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, fore-edge untrimmed. A fine copy except for an irregular small sunned area at base of spine, corresponding to a similar small chip at base of dust jacket. The printing on the spine of the jacket is faded, and the yellow background is somewhat dusty, with a very faint stain evident near the front flap fold. (Also, oddly, the front dj flap has corners neatly trimmed off, though this did not clip off the price.) Generally, an almost fine copy in a good to very good jacket. A pleasing copy overall with a nearly virginal interior. #1002. $200. Collects five supernatural tales: "The Mahatma's Story," "Jones's Karma," "Heaven," "The Intercessor," and "The Villa Desiree." Commenting on this as well as her earlier collection (Uncanny Stories, 1923), Brian Stableford notes, "The supernatural is used here in the Henry Jamesian manner . to symbolize and extrapolate the stress points which arise within human relationships, emphasizing the importance of matters of moral choice . Sinclair's stories are among the most outstanding examples of the ghost story as moral fable." -- Barron (ed.), Horror Literature 3-178. Reginald 13209. Seller Inventory # 1002
