Item description from seller

35p 16mo very fragile first printing of this important contribution to saving lives along the U S coast. Since Colonial times America's coasts were plagued by dreadful shipwrecks. Shipwrecks, death and destruction continued unabated until the tragic situation came to a head on the coast of North Carolina in late 1877 and early 1878. On Nov 24 1877 the U S Army steamer Huron wrecked off Nags Head with a loss of 103 lives lost to drowning. The Nags Head life saving station 2 miles away was closed for the season. Sumner Increase Kimball was appointed head of the Revenue Marine Division (Part of the Treasury) and proceeded to overhaul the hodge-podge system of life-saving stations along the nation's coasts. A poor but complete copy bound in black leather, spine perished covers hanging on. Very scarce. The only sale I see is the 1888 edition in 2013.
