He also held appointments at the United Nations, George Mason University, and the World Bank and received recognition worldwide for his work including posthumously from the National Geographic Society with its highest honor the Hubbard Medal. Credited with E. O. Wilson of coining the term “biological diversity” in 1980, he spent his life working in science and public policy.
