8vo. pp. iv, 240, [1 leaf]errata. folding engraved map. uncut in original wrs., rebacked in paper (map with a few dampmarks & several tears repaired - no loss - staining to upper inner margin of last leaves, paper repairs to upper inner margin of rear wr. & last 2 leaves). First Edition. A series of five letters descriptive of various aspects of American life, written for the prospective emigrant. Cooper gathered his information during a residence in Philadelphia in 1793. He himself settled permanently in America in 1795, there leading a long, distinguished and varied career as a lawyer, doctor, judge, and professor of chemistry and political economy. Also included here are tables of weights and measures, prices, duties, etc., the text of the Constitution of the United States, an extract from Tench Coxe's A View of the United States of America, as yet unpublished, and Information to those who would remove to America.
