First edition, first printing. This 1,079-page post-modernist masterpiece was released to "rapturous reviews. Overnight Wallace was deemed the most prominent writer of his generation" (ANB). The jacket is in the first state, with Vollmann misspelled as "Vollman" on the rear panel. Octavo, pp. 1079. Original blue boards, blue imitation-cloth backstrip lettered in silver, front cover with publisher's imprint in blind. With dust jacket.
