Item description from seller

First China Edition, published by Kelly and Walsh in Shanghai. The book was originally published in London in 1900. Octavo, pp vii, 447. Bound in brown cloth covered hard boards and with the original dust jacket. Letters written by Bertram Lennox Simpson of his experiences in Peking during the Siege of the Legations, using the pseudonym Bertram Weale. Simpson was a controversial figure among the British colonial service in China, and was eventually assassinated by Chinese political agents in Tientsin in 1930. Peter Fleming wrote, and not in a flattering manner, about Simpson in his 1959 book, "The Siege of Peking", and a previous owner has pasted a photocopy of half a page from Fleming's book to a blank prelim page here and also transcribed Fleming's criticism, in pencil, at the end of the foreword. The book is in Near Fine condition, with light browning to the endpapers. The jacket is chipped to the head of the spine and has some general wear, grades Good.
