Iraq, April 2003. Tom McCartney, a crack Australian SAS sergeant is at home in the army - his life is clearly defined by the clear-cut 'good versus evil' of the battlefield. When his patrol shoots innocent civilians at a road-block, he finds himself unable to cope and gets drawn into a vortex of post-traumatic stress, alcohol abuse and heroin addiction. Discharged from the army, struggling to come to terms with his role in the killings, and reluctant to go back to Australia, Tom travels to Scotland from where his great-grandmother emigrated at the end of the First World War. Haunted by flashbacks and nightmares, he experiments with ibogaine, a drug whose use began in West African tribal right-of-passage ceremonies to induce visions of long-dead ancestors. Experiencing at first hand the truth of the African legends, Tom's journey to trace his roots takes on another dimension and forces him to face the timeless truth and horror of war.
About the Author: Born and raised in the grounds of Erskine Hospital, a recovery centre for the war disabled, Jim witnessed the aftermath of war on a daily basis. Profoundly affected by what he saw, he developed a life-long interest in politics and the origins of war. Jim has written and published numerous articles on subjects such as miscarriage of justice, the war in Iraq, global poverty and the rise of fascism in the US. He is currently working on a non-fiction book about the origins of the First World War. The Iboga Visions is his debut novel.
