South Kensington Museum Art Handbooks. 8vo; robust green cloth stamped gilt to spine and front, which has also black stamped ruling, lettering and VR emblem. x + 152pp + 2pp ads for other Science and Art handbooks from the museum. (Renamed V&A in 1899). Rear free ep has been neatly removed. Very well illustrated with a mix of wood and steel engravings and some photogravure (57 in total). The contents are remarkably tight, bright and clean, particularly given the age of the book. Free from markings and inscriptions, and mercifully free from foxing. Some moderate rubbing and bumping to corners, with the top leading corners of pages showing modest creasing. CONTENTS : Introduction; I. The Production of Iron, and its History; II. The Working of Iron, and its History down to the Christian Era; III. The Age of the Blacksmith, comprising the History of Ironworking from the Ninth to the Fourteenth Century; IV. The Transition, due to Oriental Influence in the Fourteenth Century; V. The Age of the Locksmith, Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries; INDEX. The author's Preface has this : ' The present volume breaks off at the end of the Mediaeval period.
