About this Item
Hardback. This little story is based on the life of Jenny Diver, the well-known character portrayed by John Gay in his "Beggar's Opera," which was originally produced at Drury lane Theatre, on January 29th, 1727-28. Jenny Diver was a very familiar character in the early part of the 18th century. By her skill and acuteness in picking people's pockets, and other ruses that she invented for stealing goods, she rose to be the head of a gang of the cleverest thieves in the London underworld. All the intrepid adventures and dealings referred to in this work are facts actually taken from the pages of this extraordinary woman's life. However, Jenny's end came very suddenly, and her active career was but short. On the 17th January, 1740-41, she was apprehended for stealing from a lady, outside the Mansion House, the sum of twelve shillings, and was hanged at Tyburn Tree on March 18th of the same year. At her request, her remains were privately buried in the old St. Pancras churchyard, where also rest such notorious worthies as Jonathan Wild, Governor Wall, Edward Walpole and Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin. 63pp. 12mo. h/back.
