First edition in the English language. x, 54, xviii, xv, [11], 20 pp. Publisher's brown pebbled cloth with cover design stamped in gilt to front board and repeated in blind on rear board, gilt-stamped spine, all edges gilt, brown coated endpapers. Very Good. Spine sunned and dulled, chipping at head and foot, small stain to back board, portions of front decoration oxidized; small dampstain to front endpapers, hinges starting. Dickins (1838-1915) first arrived in Japan as a surgeon with the Royal Navy in 1863, and in addition to his translations of Japanese literature he would, in 1880, publish an early scholarly work on Hokusai. His presentation of the Hyakunin Isshu, a traditional Japanese anthology of waka from one hundred poets includes the full Japanese text, extensive translator's commentary, notes on pronunciation, an appendix of literal translations, and a general index.
