The ink has smeared on the "H" in Cushing's initials (see photos). With the pencil note in upper left corner of p. 1 by Walter R Bett: "E dono auctoris/ 20.VIII.31/ Walter R. Bett/ London", and Bett s small book label "W. R. Bett" on the lower left corner of p. 1 (see photos). Cushing Bibliography no. 295. The annual discourse before the Massachusetts Medical Society at the 150th reunion held in Boston, June 8-10, 1931. "His two lectures behind him Cushing cancelled all other speaking engagements until the Berne Congress save two: an address to the Massachusetts Medical Society (one of his less impressive discourses ["One hundred and fifty years. From tallow-dip to television." New England Journal of Medicine, 11 June 1931, 204, 1235-1244]). . ." (Fulton, Harvey Cushing, p. 605). Michael Bliss in his biography is less critical of this address: "Cushing warmed up for his European finale by giving a rich historical overview of American medicine, 'From Tallow-Dip to Television'. . . . He noted how the torch of medical leadership had passed to America, 'where foreign medical graduates now flock as our ambitious and favored graduates once flocked abroad [p. 22],' and he hoped that American medicine and American society would preserve the values that had worked in the past to lead to this greatness" (Bliss, Harvey Cushing, p. 467).
