First edition, very rare offprint, of the first announcement of the results of the Human Genome Project (HGP). This offprint collects together all the articles published in the 15 February, 2001 issue of Nature related to the HGP. We offer this rare offprint with the (obviously much more common) journal issue of Nature containing the same articles (as well as others unrelated to the HGP) - partly for comparison and partly because the large 'The Geography of Our Genome' poster inserted in the journal issue was not issued with the offprint. The HGP was an international scientific research project with the goal of determining the base pairs that make up human DNA, and of identifying and mapping all of the genes of the human genome from both a physical and a functional standpoint. It remains the world's largest collaborative biological project. After the idea was picked up in 1984 by the US government when the planning started, the project formally launched in 1990 and was declared complete on April 14, 2003. Funding came from the US government through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as well as numerous other groups from around the world. Most of the government-sponsored sequencing was performed in twenty universities and research centers in the United States, Japan, France, Germany and China, with about one third of the sequencing being carried out by the Wellcome Sanger Institute in the UK. We do not know how many such offprints were produced, but this is the first we have seen. It includes a letter from the publisher but the recipient is not named. Two vols., large 8vo. Original printed wrappers. The offprint is fine, the journal issue is very good wih minor wear to the spine.
