Reece, the other a monogram plate with the initals K.P., to front free endpaper, small circular sticker to front free endpaper. Moderate toning to interior, faint offsetting to first and final few leaves, light foxing in a few places, ink library stamp to verso of title page, early owner signature (affected by trimming) to head of title page, occasional annotations and underlining in an early hand. $1,250. * First edition. Coke's Reports are not reports in the conventional sense; they are highly detailed anthologies of precedents organized by topic. Taken together, they form the most extensive and detailed treatment of common law pleading that had yet appeared. A work of immense authority, it was often cited as The Reports, there being no need to mention the author's name. A highlight of the eighth part is the preface's lengthy discussion of the ancient laws of England. The annotations in our copy are brief case citations, glosses and references to other reporters. Reece [1812-1873], one of our copy's later owners, was a Warwickshire solicitor, antiquary, philanthropist, author and translator. English Short-Title Catalogue S107236.
