A very sound and attractive copy of this first edition of Zachary Grey's Hudibras, with plates by William Hogarth engraved by J Mynde, and the portrait frontispiece of Butler engraved by George Vertue. Preface xxxvi pages, 40 page list of subscribers with errata at the end, pages 1-424, 16 page index. 16 plates all present - Plate 8 (Hudibras disputing with Ralpho) is bound out of turn as per the instructions to the printer. Expertly re-backed by J S Wilson of Cambridge in contemporary style using original boards, pages and plates are very fresh and clean. On the front endpaper and pastedown, ownership inscriptions dated 1760 of Josias Cockshutt Twistleton of Osbaston Hall, Leicestershire, with his crested bookplate: also name and ex libris label of Dr Alan Gauld. All in excellent condition.
