This book shows some wear, as I'm thinking it has been opened and closed countless times throughout its 61 years of service. After all, it contains much useful information, seeing as how it is a listing of thousands of other places you could write/contact for all sorts of wide-ranging, specific info. Webbing can be seen toward top of meeting place between front paste down and loose end pages, the pages of text, as well as both sets of endpapers, have yellowed modestly, some of standard library markings are in evidence, and some random white spots/stains dot both front and back cover boards. From author's Introduction, "This guide is planned as a supplement to The Bookman's Manual and lists the 'know-how' books, pamphlets, government documents and other printed materials relating to the non-vocational, spare-time, recreational and home-making activities of men and women. Although it is primarily a handbook for booksellers, most librarians, teachers, dealers in arts and crafts materials and hobbyists should find it a quick guide to information sources. This guide emphasizes publications in print and available in the United States. Where prices are not given, the material is presumed 'out-of-print'. These out-of-print items have been included because they are still useful. The guide contains 2350 entries arranged alphabetically under 346 headings, with necessary subdivisions. Within subjects, the arrangement is from the introductory to the advanced or from the general to the specific as the various subjects warrant. For entries not found in their anticipated alphabetical place, the detailed index in the front must be consulted. Cross references among related subjects are included in the main text. .This first attempt [of a book such as this one] is exploratory and short of perfection. The editor therefore urges and welcomes criticism and suggestions from all users, both as to subjects covered and not covered and material included and not included." You might just find this slice of Americana from the middle of the last century of great interest, not to mention trying to guess just how many of the informational sources listed are still current and valid. From "Afghans" to "Yachts, Racing", volume also includes the fore-mentioned Index(18 pages worth) and, for that particular time, a listing of current "Publishers"(from Abingdon-Cokesbury Press to Ziff-Davis). Thank you very much!!
