Hardcover.First edition, 2nd printing. Hinges tender. Some shelf and edgewear. Backstrip missing and is tape repaired. Despite exterior flaws, the interior of the book is fine, clean and bright. Contains two distinct books. Household Discoveries: An Encyclopaedia of Practical Recipes and Processes was first published by the Success Company of Petersburg, New York in 1908, with a second printing following in 1909. The first edition runs to 280 pages in octavo format, with marbled edges, black boards, and a pigskin spine and corners with gilt lettering and a galleon device on the front panel — a physical object of some distinction for what is essentially a household reference work. A substantially revised and enlarged edition followed, reaching 744 pages and bound in half leather and cloth with marbled endpapers and fore-edges, occasionally found bound together with Mrs. Curtis's Cook Book as a two-volume set under a single binding. The Success Company issued further editions through at least 1914, the later printings reaching xxii and 1,205 pages. The book's premise is announced on its front notice with disarming directness: One Cent a Word. We will pay for new household discoveries, including all practical recipes and processes, not contained in this volume, one cent a word for all we can use in future editions of Household Discoveries. This reader-contribution model — part encyclopedia, part crowdsourced compendium — gives the volume its particular character and explains the extraordinary expansion of its page count across editions as new material arrived and was incorporated. The coverage is encyclopaedic in the truest sense, organized as an alphabetical or subject-grouped reference across the full range of domestic life as it was lived in an American household at the turn of the twentieth century. Cooking, baking, preserving, and food preparation are covered in detail, but so is the full infrastructure of the pre-modern home: cleaning agents and their preparation, stain removal from fabrics, pest control, the care of furniture and floors, laundering, dyeing, home remedies and the management of common ailments, the care of farm animals and domestic pets, planting and gardening, the management of fires and fuel, and the improvisation of household chemicals and preparations from raw materials. Booksellers who have handled the volume consistently describe it as a wonderful and very complete collection of household hints from the era, covering how to keep house, cook, tend the ill, and put up food. It is a primary document of domestic life and household technology in Progressive Era America, valued equally by culinary historians, researchers in the history of domestic science, and collectors of the genre, and a book that rewards browsing as much as reference use.…
