Add to basketRACHEL CARSON AT WORK THE HOUSE OF LIFE BY PAUL BROOKS 1972 1ST PRINTING. This book is not a biography of Rachel Carson; according to the author Paul Brooks, she was a very private person and would not have liked to see her life in print. He has done something else; his Preface tells us: The present volume has a twofold purpose: to present a selection of Rachel Carson s best writing, both published and unpublished, and to show whenever possible in her own words how she achieved what she did. Material from her personal papers will illustrate the meticulous research, the courage in the face of adversity and opposition, the poet s gift for language which, taken together, made her books such an effective union of science and literature. As a big fan of Rachel Carson, I am very pleased to offer this book about her work for your consideration; it is titled: The House of Life Rachel Carson at Work, by Paul Brooks. This medium-sized hard cover book (6 ¼ x 9 ¼ inches, 350 pages) was published by the Houghton Mifflin Company of Boston, dated 1972 and the First Printing (so stated). The book is bound in a light green cloth with a gilt framed dark blue title panel on cover and spine. There are twelve pages of b&w photos after page 142. There are also several pages of cartoons which appeared after the publication of Silent Spring. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are very presentable but have some darkening on the back cover where a hand might have held the book. The corners and spine tips are slightly bumped and rubbed. Inside, the former owners names appear on the front endpaper but the rest of the book is unmarked and the pages are clean and bright throughout. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. The rear endpaper shows some brown smudges presumably from the acid of the binding glues. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
