pp 128 A beautiful volume celebrating the life and work of Scottish painter Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933), lavishly illustrated with colour reproductions of Hornel's oil paintings, including landscapes, character portraits and joyful studies of children at play. The book is Fine in black cloth, lightly rubbed to the foot of the spine and lower corners; in a fine glossy dust wrapper, minor signs of handling only. The author Bill Smith retired as a Director of Robert Fleming & Co, the London merchant bank in 1992 and continued to look after the bank's important collection of Scottish art, including two early oils by Hornel among other works by the Glasgow Boys. A fitting tribute to this fine Scottish colourist. Provenance: from the recent Glasgow dispersal sale of Alasdair Gray's library. Gray (1934-2019) is acknowledged as one of the most innovative figures in Scottish literature and culture. Painter, novelist, playwright, poet and editor, Gray frequently combined his diverse artistic talents within single works to challenge existing forms. He has been described as 'Blending satire and tragedy, realism and fantasy, his work has been credited with spurring a renaissance in Scottish literature.'
