An engaging and unusually intimate portrait of Washington journalism during the turbulent early 1970s, when the Vietnam War, Watergate, and the Nixon presidency transformed the relationship between the American press and political power. Drawing on interviews, personal observations, and his own experience as a Washington correspondent, Barney Collier examines the personalities, ambitions, rivalries, professional ethics, and private lives of the journalists who shaped national news coverage. Featured figures include Ben Bradlee, Carl Bernstein, Helen Thomas, Dan Rather, James Reston, Eric Sevareid, Art Buchwald, Maxine Cheshire, Stewart and Joseph Alsop, and numerous other influential correspondents and commentators. An especially appealing feature is the extensive black-and-white photography by Maggi Castelloe, whose candid portraits capture journalists in newsrooms, private residences, and Washington political settings. The photographs include Ben Bradlee in his Washington Post office, Helen Thomas at the White House, and revealing informal portraits of Maxine Cheshire and other prominent members of the press corps. The book's original typographic jacket, designed by Richard Adelson, adds further period character. Condition: Very Good hardcover in Very Good dust jacket. Black textured boards are generally well preserved, with a few small surface marks and light wear at the extremities. Spine lettering remains bright and legible' blue endpapers are clean and attractive. Interior pages are clean and securely bound, with mild age-toning. The original, unclipped black dust jacket retains its vivid orange, white, and pale-blue typography but exhibits noticeable surface rubbing and scratches, edge and corner wear, and small tears or creases near the lower edges. The white reverse of the jacket shows age-toning and a small tear near the lower fold. A complete, visually striking copy of the stated first printing, retaining its original priced jacket. The book generated controversy among journalists when it appeared. Alexander Cockburn reviewed it critically in the December 11, 1975 issue of The New York Review of Books, and Nora Ephron wrote about the reaction in November 1975.…
