From the Publisher
It was in August 1935, two days before his ninth birthday, that the young George Melly - in the company of both his father and his grandfather - landed his first trout. It was one of the defining moments of his life, and the congratulations of his moustached grandfather 'whistling through his rather ill-fitting false teeth, dressed in a three-piece tweed suit, a butterfly collar, and a grey homburg hat' and of his father, 'in the more casual style of the Prince of Wales' still echo down the years. Thereafter, whenever the demands of his busy and colourful life as Britain's most famous and outrageous jazz singer allowed, he has escaped to the silence and magic of the riverbanks.
This book is his wonderfully evocative account of his lifelong passion for fly-fishing, and of his adventures and misadventures along the way.' If I write for anyone' he says, 'it is for those for whom the supreme thrill, especially after hours of inactivity, is when the rod bends, the line screams off the reel, the hook holds and, after a tension-filled fight, the fish surfaces, turns over on his side and the net slides under him.'
Indeed, these humorous, poetic and earthy (or perhaps watery) memories of what George Melly tends to believe to be his happiest hours complete the picture of a very diverse and versatile man. He is aware of course that their appeal will be naturally to fellow-anglers in the main - but he is also aware that more people fish than watch football!
Hooked is surely destined to join that rare company of classic books on fishing.
