No author is cited. 1897 1st edition (as stated at the bottom of the title page, with no subsequent editions listed); C.I. Hood & Co.; Lowell, Massachusetts. The book features a frontispiece illustration of "Hood's Practical Cook," and a whimsical illustration at the beginning of each chapter. Smaller in size - the book measures 5 3/4" tall x 4 1/4" wide. The Chapters are as follows: Soups, Fish, Beef, About Veal, Mutton and Lamb, Pork, Poultry and Game, Fish and Meat Sauces, Vegetables, Salads, Eggs, Bread, Fried Cakes - Fritters - etc., Sandwiches, Puddings and Sauces, Pastry, Desserts, Ice Cream, Cake, Beverages, Preserves - Jellies - Pickles - etc., The Chafing Dish, Home-Made Candies, Miscellaneous. From the Introduction: "This is not as much a Cook Book, as a Cook's Book - and hence the name. It is not from the pen and experience of a 'chef,' nor for the use of 'chefs.' It is meant for the average family, of average means, average desires and average resources. The economics of the kitchen and pantry are not below the dignity of anybody who desires to make the most of opportunity without extravagance. In the suggestions and rules of our little volume there is frugality without parsimony, and prudence without pinching." Condition: There are a few tiny stains on the covers. Tiny cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine. There is a marginal crack at the front hinge between the frontispiece and title page - despite the crack, the front cover is still firmly attached and is not shaky. The back cover is firmly attached. The title page has pulled from the spine 1/2" up from the bottom edge. The last third of the text pages have a thin, very light (barely visible) stain at the lower-outer corners. Pages 238-241 have a tiny, dark stain spot at the bottom edge. Index page 351 is partially detached and shaky. Overall the book is in Good condition.
