Hans Holbein, Hans Holbein's Scripture Cuts Icones Vetris Testamenti. 180 leaves printed with 90 of Hans Holbein's religious woodcuts prepared by brother and sister John and Mary Byfield and printed by Charles Whittingham for William Pickering 1830, thus a first edition. Inscribed by the Rev PeterHall, Topographer (1802-1849) as a gift from by William Pickering, the publisher. Externally 3/4 red calf with gilt titling and 5 raised bands and gilt stamped decoration to spine all of which is in generally good order, but scuffed to margins. Tear and small loss to marbled boards to front. Internally conforming marbled endpapers with a few tidy ink inscriptions.Introduction by Thomas Frognall Dibdin. This is the scarce trade version of the first edition, 6 very rare copies were bound in vellum, but is nevertheless a scarce book. Other than a bit of external wear, this is a very good copy the internal prints and pages are of exceptionally good quality. Store description

A small specialist bookseller with a passion for all aspects of the countryside, from farming to natural history, field sports and forestry. Particular fascination with all things to do with the history of the countryside. In searching for countryside gems, I often come across books wholly unrelated to my specialism and am always looking for great homes for these books. We are based in the Derbyshire Peak District and can source specialist books from this area. We also specialise in finding special books for gifts. So, if he special person in your life, or someone you would like to say thank you, has a particular interest and you have a budget, we can find a special book that means something to them. If they love birds and live in Kent, we will find something for you. If their passion is dairy cows, then we can find a book that tells the story of dairy farming in Britain. Working to a budget, we might be able to source a First Edition 'Origin of Species' (a big budget) or the biography of a pioneer in farming, natural history or field sports (a more modest budget). Because we know about books and are well networked, we can make an individual present special and meaningful.

Specialty

Mainly medium value specialist countryside books, £10-1000 value.
