Original brown cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine, and publisher's embossed logo on boards. Yellow pastedowns. Pages are tanned and contain a few pencil notations. Stitching is loose in a few areas. Ownership information (C. B. Hallett) in ink and pencil on flyleaves. This is a book of light and sometimes humorous essays on a variety of topics related to American life in the 19th century, including temperance, amusements, parks and promenades, jury trials, education, libraries, tenements, family holidays, and more. A number of the essays touch upon New England, and the cities of Boston and New York. Frederic W. Sawyer was also the author of A Plea for Amusements. Hardcover, good condition. 275 pages plus publisher's list, 12mo.
