About this Item
Small Octavo. 316 pages, second issue (with portrait which was lacking in the first issue). One of the earliest descriptions of the Shawnee's social and cultural practices. The author found in cases of an accidental killing the cost to be paid for a woman's death was twice since she would cost the tribe in the loss of potential children (since men cannot bear additional members). There is material related not only to the French and Indian War but other issues with the settlers and General Anthony Wayne's attempt to agree to a line of demarcation. Bound in publishers brown embossed cloth, rebacked with the old spine laid down, light damp staining to the outer margins of the first 100 or so leaves, light scattered foxing, corners and a few. A very good copy. Spots of the edges rubbed through. [Howes H275]. Seller Inventory # 028269
