The scarce complete first English language translation of Pierre Lanfrey's biographical analysis of the correspondences of Napoleon I. The scarce complete first English language edition of French historian and politician Pierre Lanfrey's magnum opus, his biographical study of Napoleon.Based on Napoleon's correspondences published between 1858-1870, Lanfrey attempted the destruction of the legends surrounding the French emperor, and sought by a critical examination of the documents to explain the motives of his policies. In his desire to refute misconceptions and exaggerations of Napoleon's abilities, Lanfrey is now viewed to have unduly minimized his military and administrative talents.First published in French in five volumes between 1867 and 1876, this first English language translation was published in four volumes between 1871 and 1879.With handwritten library labels to the tail of each back strip, the bookplate of the 'Collegium st. Maria Magdalena' to each front pastedown, and the former owner's bookplate of Michael Ashford, dated 1976, to each front free endpaper. No further internal library markings. With a forty page publisher's catalogue to the rear pf volume IV. In full cloth bindings. Handwritten library labels to back strip tails. Significant bumping to back strip heads and tails. Discolouration and marks to boards and back strips. Small areas of splits to the cloth of the joints of volumes I, II and III.
