Item description from seller

The author, Dr Cyril Smith, was widely considered the preeminent metallurgical scholar of the 20th century. In this volume he examines the impact of metallography - the determination of a metal's structure - on the processes used to form it, and on the forms and functionality of the objects that could be produced. His examination commences in medieval times and progresses down to the beginnings of the use of microscopy. Of particular interest are his notes on metallography with respect to the creation of metallic objects of art, such as the Merovingian pattern-welded blades, etched armour, Damascene blades and gun barrels and Japanese swords. A very sound copy, clean inside and out. xxii, 293 pp., 110 b&w ill.'s, index. Size: 26 x 18 cm.
