Item description from seller

Small 8vo. viii, [1], 10-301 pp + 6pp advertisements at rear. Translated from the French, With a Supplementary Chapter, Narrating the Most Recent Events, by John Oxenford. folding map of the Provinces of China Covered by the Insurrection from its Origin to the Capture of Nankin. Publisher's green blinkstamped cloth with gilt lettering to spine. A very good copy (most of gilt lettering rubbed off; minor wear to extremities; short tap repair to lower map edge, not affecting the image; light foxing to first 2 pages front and rear). The authors provide first hand accounts of the early events leading to the Taiping Rebellion, also known as the Taiping Civil War or the Taiping Revolution, a massive rebellion or total civil war in China that was waged from 1850 to 1864 between the established Manchu-led Qing dynasty and the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom under Hong Xiuquan. The conflict was the largest in China since the Qing conquest in 1644, and it also ranks as one of the bloodiest wars in human history, the bloodiest civil war, and the largest conflict of the 19th century.
