Item description from seller

First edition, 8vo (225 x 140 mm), xxx, 261, [1]pp., 2 hand-coloured geological maps (one engraved and folding, the other wood-engraved), 6 lithographed plates (of which 3 are double-page and slightly browned as usual), cont. brown moiré cloth, recased, printed title label to spine lightly chipped, uncut. A landmark contribution to early volcanology and physical geology, this work presents a detailed study of the extinct volcanic field of the Neuwied Basin in Germany's East Eifel region, including the area surrounding Laacher See. Drawing on extensive field observations and geological mapping, Hibbert reconstructed the volcanic history of the region and produced one of the earliest comprehensive accounts of its ancient volcanic landscape. "Dr. Hibbert's work is one of remarkable merit, if we consider the time at which it was written. For not only does it give a clear and detailed account of the volcanic phenomena of the Eifel and the Lower Rhine, but it anticipates the principles upon which modern writers account for the formation of river valleys and other physical features; and in working out the physical history of the Rhine valley below Mainz, and its connection with the extinct volcanoes which are found on both banks of that river, he has taken very much the same line of reasoning which was some years afterwards adopted by Sir A. Ramsay when dealing with the same subject. It does not appear that the latter writer was aware of Dr. Hibbert's treatise."Hull, Volcanoes Past and Present, p. 7. Provenance: From the Munden House library, Hertfordshire, with armorial bookplate.…
