Octavo, 390pp., illustrated with folding map. The first edition published in America, and the second printing overall, nearly a century and a half after the first edition, which was published in London. A near fine copy in the publisher's brown pebbled cloth. The folding map is tipped onto the front paste-down, which is a bit unusual, and there is evidence of a lifted bookplate below the map. Thus, most likely, the map had become detached at some point, and the collector opted to re-insert it and (mostly) cover the bookplate. Shallow wear at the crown. Still, this is a crisp, tight, and most handsome copy of a scarce North Carolina history volume. Though published in 1860, it gives the full picture of life in North Carolina at the dawn of the 18th century, and naturally contains significant passages on Native American tribes and a whole host of flora and fauna which had long been absent from the region by the time of publication. Lawson, the author, was burned at the stake by the Tuscarora Indians in 1711, three years before his account was published. Sabin 39452. Field 899. Howes L155, ("aa"). Seller Inventory # 11024
