This book offers a fascinating exploration of the world of crustaceans, a group of animals that has long captivated naturalists with their unique anatomy and remarkable adaptations. The author delves into the intricate structure of these creatures, from their segmented skeletons to their varied appendages, revealing the astonishing diversity found within this class. Drawing inspiration from the work of pioneering naturalists like RÃÂ aumur and Slabber, the author examines the process of exuviation, or molting, and the remarkable ability of crustaceans to regenerate lost limbs. This book sheds light on the intricate mechanisms behind these biological wonders, challenging prevailing scientific ideas of the time. The text also explores the fascinating adaptations of crustaceans to their environments, including the evolution of specialized respiratory organs and the development of the visual and auditory senses. This book serves as an invaluable guide for anyone interested in the natural history of crustaceans, offering a glimpse into the rich complexity of these creatures and the intricate mechanisms that govern their lives. First edition. 8vo. lxv, 386, [ads.] 4 pp. 174 text engravings; occasional light foxing. Original blue-green cloth, gilt spine. Early ownership rubber stamp of A. A. Baker. Very good. "Bell was at the heart of the scientific establishment and when Charles Darwin returned to London from the Beagle expedition on 2 December 1836, Bell was quick to take on the task of describing the reptile specimens. He was also entrusted with the specimens of Crustacea collected on the voyage. He was the authority in this field; his book British Stalk-eyed Crustacea is a masterwork. He played a significant part in the inception of Darwin's theory of natural selection in March 1837 when he confirmed that the giant Galápagos tortoises were native to the islands, not brought in by buccaneers for food as Darwin had thought." [Wikip.] Thomas Bell was President of the Linnean Society. Seller Inventory # S8478
