First Edition. Bound in half leather, some wear in accorance with age but both volumes are generally very good, smart and tight. Fully illustrated throughout with engravings. Volume 1: Published in 1824, front free endpaper has two neatly hand written inscriptions one being 'Richard Wisdom 1866' plus a later signature dated 1958. Some slight foxing to pages. The volume begins with a fold out lithograph of Lewes from South Street by F Pollard, this is adjacent to the title page which which is decorated with a small vignette of Lewes castle. Preliminaries xiv these include Preface, List of Subscribers, List of Plates, Fold-out plan of the Borough of Lewes with Cliff and Southover from Analytical Survey by J Marchant, 388 pages, followed by appendices i-xivi, including Outlines of Natural History of the Environs of Lewes, by Gideon Mantell, Members of Parliament, List of Constables etc, the volume concludes with index i-v. Volume 2: Published in 1827, title page states the given title plus Vol. 2 Containing a Description of the Environs, title page has vignette of ancient trees, handwritten inscriptions to front free endpapers as in Vol. 1, tissue protected frontispiece of 'Ashcombe, The property of Sir George Shiffner Bart.' , Preface vi, 268 pages followed by Appendices, i-xxv, including Translation of the Grant of Henry VIII to Lady Anne of Cleves and other historical documents, etc. Minor wear to extreme bottom edge of page xxiv-xxv, the index has clearly been well used, a little loose at hinge.
