The maps in this unique book are reprinted from originals held by the Public Records Office in Kew, London. These superbly crafted charts are remarkable documents that until now have only been accessible to researchers. And there is the added interest in many of the earlier examples due to the annotations made upon them by Elizabethan ministers such as Sir William Cecil, which help to emphasize that these were not only a record of the physical shape of Ireland, but also an essential part of thge maintenance of British rule.
Historical Maps of Ireland charts the history of the Emerald Isle through cartography. It spans three centuries of British rule - from the earliest representations of the map-makers art in the 16th century when the skills required to produce detailed scaled maps first developed, to the elegant charts of the 19th when the Empire was at its most powerful. Many of the earliest drawn were produced by the military - either for offensive of defensive reasons - and the military were, as the maps show, to maintain an important role in cartography right through to the modern age.
With an introduction that narrates the history of Ireland and detailed captions that give the history of each of the maps and the regions they show, this is a fascinating work that is as insightful as it is attractive.
