Thick, large octavo brown library cloth. History of Concord: Map, [I - iii] iv - vii, 1 - 392, blank, Review of History of Concord: [1-2] 3-21, A Historical Discourse: [1-3] 4-52. The large map, Plan of the Town of Concord, Mass in the County of Middlesex is present, backed with linen and measuring 23 ¼ by 19 ¼ inches. Emerson's Historical Discourse is Emerson's first separately published substantial publication, preceded only by the pamphlet and broadside printings of his 1832 Letter to the Second Church and Society of the same year. BAL 5178. Blanck lists the size of Emerson's publication as 9 ¾ by 6 7/16 inches. The leaves here have been trimmed during binding to 8 3/8 by 5 ¼ inches, which still allows for comfortable margins. The signature mark 3 is present, priority unknown. Emerson refers several times in footnotes to Shattuck's work, here supplied. The Emerson piece is clean and fresh through page 25, with light scattered foxing thereafter, a bit heavier but still quite readable in the appendix which relates the program of the meeting. The title page to the Emerson has a small, neat embossed seal of the Long Island Historical Society. The title page of the Shattuck is professionally repaired at the bottom, with light chipping remaining at the fore edge and with a small stamp of the Long Island Historical Society at the margin. The binding is sound, and other than the issues mentioned, the contents are fine. Rare.
