Some loss to head and heel of spine. Hinges remain in good condition and text block remains bound well. Light markings and marginalia. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A scarce 1st edition of collected poetry by William J. Grayson (1788-1863), a poet and former member of the House of Representatives for South Carolina. Grayson s The Hireling and the Slave, a poetic defense of slavery, is the first recorded use of the term Master Race , a saying that would later be adopted (both genuinely and satirically) to describe white supremacy and white supremacists.
