Synopsis

In "The Hidden Universe", Professor Tayler discusses the evidence that there may be much more matter in the universe than is immediately visible. This hidden matter only becomes apparent because of the gravitational influence that it exerts on other bodies in the universe. After a brief introduction the author discusses observations of the principal constituents of the universe, stars and galaxies. He moves on to review the evidence that both galaxies and clusters of galaxies are more massive than they appear, and provides cosmological evidence that there may be a large amount of hidden matter. This matter may be ordinary matter but it could also be exotic elementary particles. The present balance of evidence is that much of it is of the latter form, and Professor Tayler discusses what influence the particles would have and whether they might be detected by terrestrial experiments.
