Size of binding: 6 inches x 8 7/8 in., frontisipiece portrait of Marguerite of Navarre; title-page; contents; translator's preface (by Arthur Machen); xviii, [1]-392 pp., with the frontispiece, and eight inserted etchings by Leopold Flameng (1831-1911), these are printed on a thicker paper. A copy which shows early restoration and rebinding, using a white cloth spine, over the four raised bands, a simple gilt-lettered title: THE HEPTAMERON, and gray paper-covered boards, with the top-edge trimmed and gilt, headbands; later, cream paper endpapers, and flyleaves. In a leather-backed, blue cloth-covered slipcase, with a blue cloth-covered, wraparound chemise, the spine of the slipcase features five raised bands, gilt-lettered title, translator's name: MACHEN, and the 1886 date. The spine and outer covers show some dusting, tanning to cover edges, the front inner hinge shows a light crack to the paper, some age-related tanning to the frontispiece, title-page, and to the untrimmed fore and lower edges of the book, page margins, some pages, plates show a few, scattered tan spots, stain to lower corner of p. 51. The dark green morocco leather of the slipcase spine has faded to brown, with a few rubs to the raised bands, tanning, wear to edges. With the Rosemary Cottage (House) bookplate of Cleveland, Ohio based book collector and author, Munson Havens (1873-1942), who collected Arthur Machen's books, and corresponded with Machen during the 1920's; The Rowfant Club, of which Havens was a member, published his: "A Few Letters from Arthur Machen", in 1932.
