Minor edge and corner wear; no dj; lightly scuffed and scratched; corners are gently bumped and rubbed; some light shelf wear; ex-library with the usual library markings; overall a nice used copy! Red boards with gilt lettering on the spine. 256 historical and informative pages! "In the past quarter century, described by Mr. Randall Stewart as 'the golden age of Hawthorne criticism,' almost every facet of Hawthorne's life and art has been documented and analysed. Scholars have formulated - better than he himself could have done - his ideas on religion, politics, philosophy, and aesthetics, and have placed the man, his work, and his milieu in a flood of light. Randall Stewart has recruited the skills of science to decipher passages in Hawthorne's letters and journals that had been inked-out with loving prudery by his widow." ---- from the Preface.
