Item description from seller

A crisp first printing of Harriet Doerr's acclaimed second novel, following her National Book Award-winning Stones for Ibarra. Set in the fictional Mexican village of Amapolas, the interconnected stories follow North American expatriates whose lives are transformed by the landscape, culture, and people around them. Like Doerr's celebrated debut, the novel blends understated prose with vivid observations of place and human relationships. Doerr herself did not publish her first novel until age seventy-four, making her one of American literature's most celebrated late-blooming authors. This is a true First Edition, First Printing, confirmed by the copyright page stating 'First edition' and the complete 'A B C D E' first-printing code used by Harcourt Brace in 1993. The original unclipped dust jacket retains the price and credits jacket illustration by Mary Bowles with book design by Trina Stahl. The binding remains tight and square. Cream paper-covered boards with terra-cotta cloth spine are exceptionally clean with bright gilt spine lettering. Interior pages are fresh and unmarked with no writing, bookplates, or remainder marks observed. A tiny black remainder-style mark appears on the top edge of the text block. Dust jacket is Near Fine, showing only light overall toning from the natural paper stock, a hint of rubbing at the extremities; no chips, significant tears, or price clipping. Overall condition: Near Fine book in Near Fine dust jacket. Although Consider This, Señora never achieved the commercial success of Stones for Ibarra, many critics regard it as Harriet Doerr's most structurally ambitious work, expanding the fictional Mexican world she had developed through earlier stories published in The New Yorker. The jacket's quiet landscape illustration by Mary Bowles complements the novel's contemplative tone, while designer Trina Stahl employed restrained typography and natural materials that have become characteristic of many distinguished Harcourt literary first editions of the early 1990s. Because the first printing was relatively modest, attractive first-state copies with their original unclipped jackets have become increasingly desirable to collectors of modern literary fiction.…
