Don Carpenter s first book published in 1966 and perhaps the novel for which he is most well know. His novels were not read, at the time, by wide audiences and to support himself he wrote screenplays in Hollywood including the Rip Torn Film, Payday which was filmed in 1972. Carpenter s books depicted the seedy, marginal characters, such as pool sharks, criminals, drug dealers, and taken from his time in Hollywood, movie moguls. Critics and writers alike, praised his work and he was best friends with fellow writer Richard Brautigan, who tragically took his own life in 1984. Eerily, Carpenter would himself, commit suicide after facing increasing illness and debilitating health issues in 1995. .
