Hard Cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Harrison Cady (illustrator). First Edition. Children's fantasy verse, in which a race of insect-winged miniature people sleeping in a hollow oak since the American Revolution are awakened, joining forces with small animals & insects; adventures ensue, including an automibile race, visit to a zoo, Christmas celebration. One of the Happychaps is a stereotyped caricature of an African-American; other microaggressions against the Irish, Japanese, & no doubt others can be found - inclusion or insensitivity? An early work for both involved. Hardcover, as pictured. Book shows some wear, pleasantly alliterative ink name in several places, with place & date in one instance; minor smudges, pages 118 & 119 badly tanned from old newspaper clippings, since discarded. The Happychaps dancing on the front cover include a black-skinned fellow playing a banjo, as well as insects, frog and other chubby little people. Normal fading and shelfwear. Inside front cover has a return address label as a bookplate. Ownership name in pencil on the free endpaper dated 1908. Some clear tape repair at the gutter at the front endpaper. Title page dated 1908. 135 pages. Illustrated on every page Some minor fading from age, but nothing severe. Text block tight. Scarce. Please email with questions or to request photos. No writing or markings to speak of to the interior, boards clean and bright. Octavo, verses by Carolyn Wells, wonderfully illustrated by Harrison Cady, with full-page and in-text drawings thruout.
