Item description from seller

1928. First UK edition. vii, [i], 250pp., a frontispiece and 7 other black and white plates. From 1573 to 1617, Master Franz Schmidt was the executioner for the towns of Bamberg and Nuremberg. During that span, he personally executed more than 350 people while keeping a journal throughout his career. 'A Hangman’s Diary' gives a year-by-year breakdown on all of Master Franz Schmidt’s executions, which included hangings, beheadings, and other methods, as well as details of each capital crime and the reason for the punishment. The Diary is preceded by a brief account of criminal procedure in Germany in the Middle Ages by C. Calvert and an introduction to Schmidt's diary by Albrecht Keller. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling to the boards and bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with slight browning to the free endpapers and a name and date (1928) written in pencil on the front free endpaper.…
