St Leonards, Allen & Unwin, [August] 1994 [first edition]. Octavo, x, 157 pages. Trade paperback; paper tanned, as ever; essentially a fine copy of this award-winning and controversial novel. 'Winner of the "Australian"/Vogel Literary Award' is printed above the author's name across the foot of the front cover. Offered together with fine copies of first printings of both the second and third editions of this work. The second edition ('This edition published in 1995') differs only by the ISBN and an additional line of text on the front cover: 'Miles Franklin Literary Award Winner 1995'. The third edition contains a number of variations, apart from a new ISBN and imprint details ('Second edition published in 1995 | Third edition published in 1995'). The author's name on the spine and front cover is now Helen Darville; the author's short biographical sketch beneath her frontispiece portrait now has some additional text, to the effect that 'the book was first published under the authorship of Helen Demidenko. The author's name, in fact, is Helen Darville'; and no longer present on the rear cover are the comments of high praise by David Marr ('astonishingly talented . with the true novelist's gift of entering into the imagination of those she is writing about'), and Jill Kitson ('A searingly truthful account of terrible wartime deeds that is also an imaginative work of extraordinary redemptive power'). Geoffrey Cains, in 'Access Denied. A Bibliography of Suppressed Australian Literature' (2021), states: 'As with many literary hoaxes in Australia this one involved complex issues of the nature of identity and the "I" of the narrative. It can be argued that in Darville's case the assumption by her of an ethnic identity was premeditated to deceive. Her motive has not been clearly determined. The heated debate that followed publication of the book said a lot about literary criticism in Australia. As with other literary hoaxes "the responses have either been dismissive of assumed stereotypical identities or celebrate the author for their fluid subjectivities'. He also quotes from a letter from the publisher, written on 25 August 1995, the day after the hoax was revealed: 'Like the author, we feel the book should continue to be judged on its literary merits. We will be reissuing this book as soon as possible with Helen Darville credited as author'. Cains 40. [3 items].

Right of withdrawal

If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.

Statutory right to withdraw

You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.

To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.

Effects of withdrawal

If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.

We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.

You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Michael Treloar Booksellers ANZAAB/ILAB, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia, +61 0882231111, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.

Exceptions to the right of withdrawal

The right of withdrawal does not apply to:

The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.

Shipping terms

Orders shipped within two business days.

Shipping charges quoted are based on a 1kg (2.2 lb) parcel. This is usually sufficient for a standard octavo book properly packed for shipping.

Heavier books, sets of books, or for parcels sent by express or courier services may require extra shipping charges.

Insurance is not included, but can be arranged on request; please contact us for a quote.
