The Hawker Hurricane was flying at the outbreak of World War Two in 1939 and was still playing a major part in the war against the enemy in 1945, by then employed in the Far East. It is most widely remembered in its fighter role and then unjustly in the shade of the Spitfire. Yet the role of the Hurricane was varied indeed: fighter, fighter bomber, anti tank aircraft, and use at sea. Nor was its theatre of operations any less wide: in action in France from the beginning of the 'phoney-war' to the outbreak of Blitzkrieg, in the Battle of Britain, and worldwide as far afield as Russia, Sumatra, Java, Madagascar and the Far East. Adrian Stewart in this readable and clear account of the Hurricane's history describes all its roles and achievements in each theatre of war. He also recounts the exploits of the aircraft's outstanding pilots who contributed so much towards the mastery oif the skies which was essential for final victory. Ref OO 2.
