Blind-stamped brown cloth covered boards with title stamped in gilt to center of front cover, with light wear to the corners and to the head and tail of spine, and two light abrasions to front cover for what is a very nice copy of the book. Plain endpapers with a small wormhole in the final three leaves, all of which pages are blank. [i-iii], iv, [5-7], 8-83, [84] pp. plus 1-18 pp. advertisements plus large folding map at rear. This is one of two issues of the first edition, with the "opinions of the press" on page 5, and the longer pagination of the main text of what was considered "the best handbook for the central route available at the time" (Howes), that would guide the ever increasing numbers of emigrants heading west, including the prospectors seeking their fortunes in California gold which had been discovered just three short years prior to this book's publication. Streeter said this was "one of the best of the guides, as it is one of the few where the distances were closely measured". The book contains "a table of distances [starting at Council Bluffs Agency Ferry and ending in Sacramento City; distances are shown both from place to place and from Council Bluffs], and showing all the rivers, creeks, lakes, springs, mountains, hills, camping-places, and other prominent objects; with remarks on the country, roads, timbers, grasses, etc.; the entire route having been tracked by a road-measurer . . . with a complete and accurate map."; folding map measuring 13-3/4" H x 20-3/4" W attached inside back cover; map with a few minor splits at intersection of folds. Collector's green half-leather over matching cloth covered board slipcase with gilt titles and decoration to spine with rubbing to the corners and spine ends. Howes H641, Cowan 292, Streeter 3170.
