Item description from seller

First printing of the true first edition. ***Near fine in orange cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright. Boards clean and unmarked. No creasing to the boards. Corners sharp. Page block edges very clean. Internally also near fine with pages bright and crisp. No inscriptions. No creases or tears. No reading lean. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 18s net. The dustwrapper is virtually complete, with just very slight loss at the head of the spine. There is also a certain amount of rubbing and creasing to the extremities. There is a closed tear at the top of the back panel near the spine, and an associated horizontal crease. No serious chips or tears. The large foldover flaps remain uncreased. No fading, even to the spine. Dustwrapper bright. ***256 pages. 192mm x 130mm. ***''John Anthony Burgess Wilson, FRSL (25 Feb 1917 - 22 Nov 1993) who published under the name Anthony Burgess, was an English writer and composer. Although Burgess was primarily a comic writer, his dystopian satire "A Clockwork Orange" remains his best-known novel. In 1971, it was adapted into a controversial film by Stanley Kubrick, which Burgess said was chiefly responsible for the popularity of the book. Burgess produced numerous other novels, including the Enderby quartet, and "Earthly Powers". He wrote librettos and screenplays, including the 1977 television mini-series "Jesus of Nazareth". He worked as a literary critic for several publications, including The Observer and The Guardian, and wrote studies of classic writers, notably James Joyce. A versatile linguist, Burgess lectured in phonetics, and translated Cyrano de Bergerac, Oedipus Rex, and the opera Carmen, among others. Burgess also composed over 250 musical works; he considered himself as much a composer as an author, although he achieved considerably more success in writing.' (Wiki) ***A nice first edition copy of one of the less common Anthony Burgess titles, in very nice collectable condition. This title is very hard to find in collectable condition. The dustwrapper is usually found in a damaged and incomplete state. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
