Houghton Mifflin Company, 1938 First Edition, First printing, First State:ÂA near fine copy of the FIRST printing, in the FIRST state dated 1938 to the title page with the â bowing elfâ to the title page. (First Printings in the first state have a â bowing elfâ , the second state has a â sitting elf playing the fluteâ ). The unrestored book is in the original slightly toned oatmeal cloth boards with sharp corners, and no edgewear but a tiny bit to the outer spine tips. The binding is tight and square and withOUT the cracked hinges which is more typically found with this book. The front and rear end papers are in lovely clean condition with no owner names, no bookstore stamps and no inscriptions, and depicts the map of the â Wilderlandâ to the front and rear end papers. The internal pages are very clean with but one or two very faint handling marks, otherwise the internal pages have No handling marks, No stains, and No creased nor bent pages. A remarkably clean fresh book internally with all pages present and firmly bound, including all the color plates and the black and white illustrations. This copy has the bowing elf on the title page which makes this book a True edition, First printing in the FIRST state. A clean example and delightful to read. Please see images.
