CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Firstly, this is a high-quality production; the plates are well executed, the maps detailed, and the result is an attractive volume. As to the author, at the outbreak of the Civil War, Bryant volunteered for service with a Wisconsin militia company and was enrolled in the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. He was appointed sergeant major. Within a year, he received a commission and was made adjutant to the regiment's colonel, Thomas H. Ruger. With the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry, Bryant participated in many of the significant battles of the eastern theater of the war, including Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. In August 1863, he was with the brigade when sent to quell the New York City draft riots. Following, the regiment was sent to Tennessee to reinforce Rosencran's Army in Chattanooga as part of the new XX Corps, Army of the Cumberland. They participated in Sherman's Atlanta Campaign and the March to the Sea. The 3rd Wisconsin was mustered out on July 18, 1865, in Louisville, Ky. The regiment is recognized as one of the FOX 300 Fighting Regiments. REFERENCES: DORN WI#47; NEVINS I pg. 65: "An excellent regimental history; maps and illustrations are above average, and the text is particularly revealing for battles."
