Hardback, full calf binding with raised bands and gilt-blocked title to spine. Folio/2o size, measures 9 1/2" x 14 3/8" x 2 12", though gatherings are quarto/4to. Pagination: [xiv], 502, [16], 186 (though page 186 is misprinted as 176). Page edges speckled red. Title page contains woodcut vignette. Woodcut engraving of Besly. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces. Two foldout genealogical plates. Scuffing and wear to binding with some loss to leather at head and tail of backstrip and a little to corners of boards, which are bumped, though the boards generally have retained their leather very well. Some cracking to outer hinges and to inner hinges but holding well and quite firm. Page edges are browned, scuffed and otherwise marked. Some marking to endpapers. The odd dog-eared page corner and a few torn edges. Monastic ink inscription to title page. (Appears to read: Monasterii S. Joannis baptistae Congregaonis Montis orius S. Maury Catalogo Inscriptus 1679 [Monastery of St. John the Baptist, Congregation of Mount Orius, St. Maury, Catalogue Inscribed 1679]. Some toning and a little light scattered foxing. Also some staining to title page and tail edges of hindmost pages. Thumbing and other marking to page surfaces, with a little staining. No apparent underlining, marginalia, etc. A scarce first edition of a significant early work on Poitou and Aquitaine. See pictures for further information. About the author/À propos de l'auteur: Jean Besly est né à Coulonges-les-Royaux, près de Niort (Deux-Sèvres). Issu d'une famille de marchands, il fait ses études à Poitiers, puis à Toulouse. Avocat à Fontenay-le-Comte, il acquiert rapidement une grande réputation qui lui permet un mariage fort avantageux avec Catherine Brisson, parente d'un autre jurisconsulte de renom, Barnabé Brisson (1559). Catherine décédée, il se remarie avec Claude Duboullay en 1610.Devenu conseiller et avocat du roi, il est député de Fontenay-le-Comte aux États Généraux de 1614. Il s'y distingue par son opposition à la réception du concile de Trente en France. Il est maire de Fontenay en 1620.Mais la gloire de Besly est surtout posthume : elle lui vient de son "Histoire des Comtes de Poitou et Ducs de Guyenne", une somme d'érudition à laquelle il a consacré presque quarante années de sa vie, qui ne sera publié qu'en 1646, soit deux ans après sa mort. Pionnière et monumentale, cette oeuvre a fait de Besly le premier véritable historien du Poitou. A lawyer in Fontenay-le-Comte, he quickly acquired a great reputation, which allowed him a very advantageous marriage to Catherine Brisson, a relative of another renowned jurist, Barnabé Brisson (1559). After Catherine's death, he remarried Claude Duboullay in 1610.
